"Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness…"

Text: Genesis 1 : 26 - 31

THE CREATION OF MAN

It is estimated that there are 6 billion human beings on earth today! Some suggest that there are too many people on this planet! Because babies are born every hour of the day, human life is taken too much for granted! How refreshing it is to take time to read the account of the first pair of human beings! Perhaps we will discover in a fresh new way what it means to have life.

THE ORIGINAL PLAN

Man has the distinction of being selected to be the bearer of God’s image. The majestic king of the birds, the eagle was not chosen to bear God’s image. Neither was the king of the beasts, the lion chosen to bear His image.

“Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image,
according to Our likeness; let them have dominion
over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air,
and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every
creeping thing that creeps on the earth.'”

GENESIS 1:26

God planned to give to man both dignity and dominion! The former relates to his being made in God’s image and likeness. The latter relates to the authority that God imbued man with! Though he would not be as strong or as large as some of the other creatures, man would nevertheless have dominion over all God’s creatures.

THE ORIGINAL PLAN CARRIED OUT

God carried out what He had planned without hesitation or regret. Let us read with deep humility the creation of Adam and Eve.

“So God created man in His own image;
in the image of God He created him;
male and female He created them.
Then God blessed them, and God said to them,
‘Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it;
have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air,
and over every living thing that moves on the earth.'”

GENESIS 1:27

Both male and female were created in God’s image. Both were equally blessed! Both were given the authority to “be fruitful and multiply”. They were to “have dominion… over every living thing that moves on earth”.

A PERSONAL APPRECIATION OF BEING CREATED

Again, we are indebted to the writings of King David, the sweet psalmist of Israel. He wrote with deep appreciation God’s personal involvement in the creation of Life!

“I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made…”

PSALM 139:14a
