Genesis
Day
Day 3

"And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters."

Text: Genesis 1

THE FOCUS ON THE CREATION OF THE EARTH

After the initial statement that God created the heavens and the earth, the author focused his attention on the latter. This is understandable for more reasons than one. It accords well with man’s interest in knowledge of the earth than of the universe at large. It is only in recent years that advanced knowledge of the solar system and beyond was made possible!

THE INITIAL UNFORMED EARTH

What was the earth like before it was formed the way we know it today? We have a most interesting description in the following text.

The earth was without form, and void;
and darkness was on the face of the deep.

GENESIS 1:2a

What a startling description! No form! Earth had precious little to commend itself. There was only a great watery mass and deep darkness prevailed! It was anything but beautiful, until God began His work of creation!

WHO WAS INVOLVED IN THE CREATION PROCESS?

It takes faith to comprehend this important truth! All three Persons in the Godhead were involved in the creation process!

1. The Lord God

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Genesis 1:1(Cf. Isaiah 40:28)

2. The Holy Spirit

And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

Genesis 1:2b

3. The Lord Jesus Christ

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.

John 1:1-3 (Cf. Colossians 1:16; Hebrews 1:2).

SIGNIFICANCE OF THIS UNDERSTANDING OF THE CREATION PROCESS

The Lord Himself applied the significance of comprehension of the Creation process.

Have you not known? Have you not heard?
The everlasting God, the LORD,
The Creator of the ends of the earth,
Neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable.
He gives power to the weak,
And to those who have no might He increases strength…
But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength…

ISAIAH 40:28-29, 31

Let us find renewed strength through our faith in the Lord our Creator!
