"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth"
Text: Genesis 1
“IN THE BEGINNING GOD…”
The phrase, “In the beginning” seems unbelievably simple to commence the writing of the Book of Genesis, and in the larger scheme of things, the Scriptures. But contained within this phrase are powerful and humbling truths.
1. Man is only Finite
Sometimes we come across phrases like “infinite possibilities” or “infinite potential”. Our first reaction is that of excitement. Man sees himself as a creature with infinite potential! The solemn reality is that man is only finite. All creatures are essentially finite. They may be impressive, but there are limits! The phrase, “In the beginning” reminds us to humble ourselves as we grapple with the concept of our being created beings.
2. God is Infinite
With great skill, God is introduced as Creator. If it may speak of Someone who is truly not limited by time and space, or anything else, then that Person has to be truly and absolutely Infinite. Moses unabashedly introduced this Infinite God as the Creator of the vast heavens and the humble earth!
AN APPRECIATION OF CREATION
While some may query such beliefs, there are others who through eyes of faith view creation as master-pieces of God’s artistry. One such man was the king David who in a flourish of faith wrote some very striking lines about how creation glorifies God!
“The heavens declare the glory of God;
And the firmament shows His handiwork.
Day unto day utters speech,
And night unto night reveals knowledge.
There is no speech nor language
Where their voice is not heard.
Their line has gone out through all the earth.
And their words to the end of the world.”Psalm 19:1-4
David, the second king of the ancient kingdom of Israel, was a shepherd in his younger days. Many were the nights spent in the open fields, watching over his flocks of sheep. Each night when the moon and the stars came out, David’s heart was drawn to think of God and to hold Him with the greatest sense of awe and reverence.
Daytime did not diminish his sense of appreciation of the glory of God! The day had its own speech about the glory of God! Day and night, creation seemed compelled to declare the glory of its Maker! Creation spoke a truly universal language that all inhabitants of the earth can understand. There is no language barrier when creation speaks. Its message to the end of the world is “The Glory of God”. Blessed is the man who has faith, and beholding the beauty of creation acknowledges God as Creator!
