Day 12

"The gospel which was preached by me is not according to man."

Text: Galatians 1:11b

THE MINISTRY OF PREACHING THE GOSPEL

One of the works assigned to the servants of the Lord Jesus Christ was the preaching of the gospel. This was the task that all true servants of Christ must seek to fulfil.

But I make known to you, brethren,
that the gospel which was preached by me
is not according to man.

Galatians 1:11

1. “But I make known to you, brethren”

a) An open confession was needed.
b) Paul wanted to clear up whatever doubts had arisen concerning his ministry.
i) His motivation as a bondservant of Christ.
ii) His ministry as a bondservant of the Lord.

2. “That the gospel which was preached by me”

a) What was this gospel that Paul preached?
b) This gospel seemed to be queried:-
i) By the enemies of Paul.
ii) These were the false teachers who had influenced the Galatian churches.
c) They managed to plant seeds of doubt concerning the gospel that Paul preached.
d) They surmised that the gospel preached by Paul was different from that proclaimed by others.

3. “Is not according to man”

a) Doubts had arisen concerning the authenticity of the gospel Paul proclaimed.
b) Paul’s gospel did not seem to be “according to man”.
i) This was the slant put in by the false teachers.
ii) They were suggesting that Paul’s gospel was defective or inferior or worse.
c) Paul agreed that his gospel was indeed not “according to man”.
i) He did not seek to please men.
ii) He did not seek to persuade men.
iii) Nevertheless the gospel he preached was faithful and true.
iv) He was a faithful and loyal bondservant of the Lord Jesus Christ and thus he served as he did.
v) He was unashamed to have preached as he did as a true bondservant of Christ.
