Text: Luke 3:22

INTRODUCTION

There are few doctrines that are more important than the teaching about the Holy Spirit. The Scriptures contain many significant texts that speak of the Holy Spirit. However, these are scattered references. Our challenge is to collate the relevant texts and to study them so that they form a significant and collective whole.

INSPIRATION

This new series of Devotions is drawn from our reading of “Forty Days and Forty Nights.” Luke noted the involvement of the Holy Spirit in the life and ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ.

“And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove
upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said,
‘You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.'”
Luke 3:22

“Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned
from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness.”
Luke 4:1

“Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee,
and news of Him went out through all the surrounding region.”
Luke 4:14

1. The Anointing by the Holy Spirit

a) He descended upon the Lord Jesus Christ.
b) This is a beautiful picture describing the anointing of the Lord Jesus for His public ministry.

2. The Filling of the Holy Spirit

a) The filling of the Holy Spirit was just as important as the anointing.
b) The role of the Spirit of God in life and ministry was evident and significant.

3. The Leading of the Holy Spirit

a) The leading of the Spirit of God was of crucial importance.
b) The Holy Spirit would lead Jesus in His earthly life and ministry.

4. The Empowering of the Holy Spirit

a) The Holy Spirit empowered Jesus for life and ministry.
b) This power would be evident in all He did.

BE FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT

The Apostle Paul was one who was filled with the Spirit of God. This was evident in the way he served the Lord. The filling of the Spirit of God however is not limited to the Lord Jesus Christ, nor to the holy apostles! The Book of Acts records for us many instances of ordinary people who were filled with the Holy Spirit.

Let us bear in mind the encouraging words of the Apostle Paul to the Ephesian Church. He wrote, “Be filled with the Spirit” (Ephesians 5:18). Let us desire to be filled with the Spirit of God as we commence our reading of this new set of Devotions, “Filled with the Holy Spirit!” Let us humbly and earnestly pray that we may be filled with God’s Spirit. May many hearts be anointed and be filled with the Holy Spirit of God!
