"According to the Spirit..."

Text: Romans 8:1

THE EPISTLE TO THE ROMANS

Arguably, the most comprehensive and theological of the writings of the Apostle Paul is his Epistle to the Romans. This scholarly treatise deals with the doctrine of salvation extensively! Here is a quick overview of the Book of Romans.

1. Sin (Romans 1-3)

a) This was a major problem.
b) God’s anger is declared against sin.
c) Because of his sinfulness man will have to face the judgment of God.

2. Salvation (Romans 4-5)

a) God offers a solution.
b) He offers salvation through justification.
c) Faith is the means by which man receives salvation.
d) The grace, mercy and love of God undergirds this divine plan of salvation.

3. Struggles with sin even after salvation (Romans 6-7)

a) This is a factual problem.
b) This is a problem that affects everyone (including the apostle Paul).
c) But the believer does not need to remain powerless and weak.

4. Solution offered through the ministry of the Holy Spirit

a) Romans 8 is dedicated to teaching about the ministry of the Holy Spirit.
b) Paul offers a significant overview of how the Holy Spirit can effectively empower us.

THE LAW OF THE SPIRIT

The following text offers a truly uplifting teaching about the Holy Spirit.

“There is therefore now no condemnation to those
who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk
according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.”
Romans 8:1

1. “No condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus”

What a glorious thought!

2. “Who do not walk according to the flesh”

This is an important word that must be understood and borne in mind. If a person is truly in Christ, he will choose to walk according to the Spirit and not according to the flesh.

3. “But according to the Spirit”

With this statement, Paul begins an important discussion of how the believer must learn to walk according to the Holy Spirit in Romans 8.
