EARLY THEOLOGICAL GLEANINGS ABOUT THE HOLY SPIRIT

What are some things we may learn about the doctrine of the Holy Spirit thus far? The following may be highlighted:-

1. The anointing of the Spirit of God

a) This is vital for ministry.

b) Moses was an example of what it means to be anointed by the Spirit of God.

2. The role of the “prophet”

a) He would be a servant of God.

b) He would have a close relationship with God.

c) God would communicate certain messages to the prophets.

d) They would then be able to prophesy.

e) This ministry would involve a supernatural gift from God.

3. The Person of the Lord

a) He would have tremendous authority.

b) He had divine power.

c) He was sovereign.

i) He could rest upon the seventy elders.

ii) He could also rest upon others.

iii) No one can instruct the Spirit of God.

THE STATEMENT OF MOSES TO JOSHUA

What did Moses mean when he said these words to Joshua (Numbers 11:29)? Let us ponder the following thoughts: –

1. The LORD would have loved to fill every heart with the Spirit of God.

2. He would have desired that everyone had a close relationship with Him as His prophets did.

3. Moses at that point of time had a very special relationship with God, closer than any prophet would ever have with God (Numbers 12:6-8).

4. There are some reasons why some are not Spirit-filled:

a) Lack of a strong faith-relationship with God.

b) Lack of a deeply committed heart of service exemplified by Moses.

c) Lack of a truly humble and meek spirit that Moses cultivated along the way.
