"Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit..."

Text: Ephesians 6:18

A GREAT SPIRITUAL BATTLE

Paul’s Epistle to the Ephesians concluded with sound and necessary advice concerning how we may engage in spiritual warfare effectively. We need to learn how to put on the armour of God and find strength to stand against great powers, and having done all, to stand!

1. The spiritual war

a) Our enemies are not flesh and blood.
b) They are powerful spiritual beings (Ephesians 6:12).

2. The Spiritual armour

a) Belt of truth (Ephesians 6:14)
b) Breastplate of righteousness (Ephesians 6:14)
c) Shoes- the Gospel of peace (Ephesians 6:15)
d) Shield of faith (Ephesians 6:16)
e) Helmet of salvation (Ephesians 6:17)
f) Sword of the Spirit (Ephesians 6:17)

The sword of the Spirit is a reference to the mighty word of God! The challenge is obvious. We need to learn how to wield the sword of the Spirit well.

PRAYER AND THE SPIRIT OF GOD

Prayer is a very special privilege that God has given to every child of His. It is not without significance that prayer was urged in this spiritual warfare.

“Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit,
being watchful to this end with
all perseverance and supplication for all the saints.”
Ephesians 6:18

1. “Praying always with all prayer and supplication”

a) Paul gave a similar piece of advice to Timothy (1 Timothy 2).
b) Every effort in prayer must be made.
c) Supplications is a more intense way of praying.

2. “In the Spirit”

a) This is a reference to the involvement of the Holy Spirit.
b) He will move us to deepen our prayer life.
c) He will enable us to pray with greater fervour and effectiveness.

3. “Being watchful to this end with all perseverance”

This is our part. We must not fail to learn how to be more watchful and persevering praying for the saints!
