"Access by one Spirit to the Father."

Text: Ephesians 2:18

ACCESS TO GOD

What a privilege it is to have access to the LORD our God. Yet, all too often we take this privilege for granted. Let us attempt to deepen our appreciation of what it means to have “access” to God.

“For through Him we both have access by One Spirit to the Father.”
Ephesians 2:18

1. “Through Him”

a) This is an obvious reference to the Lord Jesus Christ.
i) His role is of critical importance.
ii) He had to shed His blood for us to have salvation.
iii) Only through Christ we have the full benefits of God’s salvation.
b) Let us review how this access was made possible in the first place:
i) God, out of His great love, made us come alive (Ephesians 2:4-5).
ii) He gave us salvation by His grace (Ephesians 2:5, 7, 8).
iii) Those afar off were brought near by the blood of Christ (Ephesians 2:13).
iv) The Lord Jesus has made possible our reconciliation (Ephesians 2:16).
v) This reconciliation is with special reference to Jews and Gentiles (Ephesians 2:14-17).

2. We both have access

a) This is a reference to Jews and Gentiles.
b) Once there was “the middle wall of separation” (Ephesians 2:14).
c) Gentiles would have to become like Jews to be part of their community.
d) In Christ, Gentiles do not need to become Jews.
e) Both have equal access to the Lord God.
f) The word “access” may be understood as:
i) The freedom.
ii) The right to have an entrance into the Presence of God.

3. By one Spirit to the Father

a) It is the Spirit of God who will lead us into the Presence of God the Father.
b) It is the Spirit of God who will teach us how to call God, “Abba, Father”.
c) This is a special work of the Holy Spirit that we need to appreciate much more.
