"And the Spirit rested upon them..."

Text: Numbers 11:26

AN UNUSUAL PHENOMENON

There was an unusual incident that Moses recorded on this occasion. The story was simply recorded in the following text.

“But two men had remained in the camp:
the name of one was Eldad, and the name of the other Medad.
And the Spirit rested upon them. Now they were among
those listed, but who had not gone out to the tabernacle;
yet they prophesied in the camp.
And a young man ran and told Moses, and said,
‘Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.’
So Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ assistant,
one of his choice men, answered and said,
‘Moses my lord, forbid them!'”
Numbers 11:26-28

1. “Eldad and Medad”

a) We do not have much information as to who they were.
b) They were certainly not among the seventy elders.

2. “And the Spirit rested upon them”

a) The same sign-gift was given to them.
b) They were given the same gift of prophecy.
c) Thus they were anointed by the Spirit of God too.

3. Reaction from two younger men

a) There was an unnamed young man.
i) He ran to Moses with this news.
ii) He did not know how to interpret what had happened.
b) There was Joshua.
i) He was well regarded given the words written about him.
ii) He was the assistant of Moses.
iii) He was a choice young man.
iv) In his zeal he asked Moses to stop them from prophesying.

MOSES’ WORD OF COUNSEL

His heart was gracious as he spoke these words to Joshua. If only God’s people were all Spirit-filled!

“Oh, that all the LORD’s people were prophets
and that the LORD would put His Spirit upon them!”
