"God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son..."

Text: Galatians 4:6

OUR REDEMPTION IN CHRIST

The gift of the Spirit of God is very much tied to the redemption that we have in the Lord Jesus Christ.

“Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law,
having become a curse for us (for it is written,
‘Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree’),
that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus,
that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.”
Galatians 3:13-14

1. “Christ has redeemed us”

a) From the curse of the law.
i) When people fail to keep the law they will be judged.
ii) The penalty of the law is described here as “the curse of the law”.
b) How did Christ remove the curse of the law?
i) He took the penalty of our transgressions, sin and iniquity upon Himself.
ii) He took the brunt of the curse upon Himself when He died on the cross of Calvary.

2. “The blessing of Abraham”

a) This was not limited to Israel.
b) Gentiles might receive the blessing God promised Abraham.
c) This is made possible through faith in Christ.
d) The promise of the Spirit of God is received through faith in Christ.

CHILDREN OF GOD

One of the blessings that we have through faith in Christ is that we become the children of God (John 1:12).

“And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit
of His Son into your hearts, crying out, ‘Abba, Father!’
Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son,
and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.”
Galatians 4:6-7

1. “God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts”

a) How precious this word is!
b) The Spirit of the Lord Jesus Christ indwells every true child of God.

2. “An heir of God through Christ”

What a glorious truth! We are not slaves but children of God and heirs through faith in Christ! And the Spirit of God will confirm this truth within our hearts! How wonderful it is to be able to cry out “Abba, Father!”
