Text: 1 Corinthians 12:31

THE SPIRITUAL GIFTS OF GOD

The spiritual gifts of God are to be greatly appreciated. Much care is needed when utilising these gifts or the danger of misuse could result. It takes much wisdom and maturity to employ the spiritual gifts of God effectively.

A MORE EXCELLENT WAY

The Apostle Paul wanted the Corinthian Church to realise that there was much more to the Christian life and ministry than spiritual gifts.

“But earnestly desire the best gifts.
And yet I show you a more excellent way.”
1 Corinthians 12:31

1. “But earnestly desire the best gifts”

Spiritual gifts are of course to be desired.

2. “A more excellent way”

The place of “love” was well determined in the Scriptures.

a) It was a specific command given to His disciples (John 13:34-35).
b) It is described as the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23).

3. Features highlighted (1 Corinthians 13:1-8)

a) Love suffers long (patient).
b) Exercises kindness.
c) It is not envious.
d) It does not parade itself.
e) It is not puffed up.
f) It does not behave rudely.
g) It does not seek its own (advantage).
h) It is not provoked.
i) It thinks no evil.
j) It does not rejoice in iniquity but rejoices in the truth.
k) It bears all things.
l) It believes all things.
m) Hopes all things.
n) Endures all things.
o) Love never fails.
