"And will put the same upon them..."

Text: Numbers 11:17

THE ANOINTING OF LEADERS

The anointing of the Holy Spirit is absolutely crucial to effective ministry. That anointing was given to Bezalel and a highly gifted team of artisans for the work of the Tabernacle. But other types of leaders must be found.

“Then I will come down and talk with you there.
I will take of the Spirit that is upon you and will put the same upon them;
and they shall bear the burden of the people with you,
that you may not bear it yourself alone.”
Numbers 11:17

1. Seventy men of the elders of Israel

a) These men were known to Moses.
b) Moses would gather these elders.
c) They were to be brought to the tabernacle of meeting (Numbers 11:16).

2. The LORD God

a) He Himself would come down.
b) He would make His presence known.
c) He will speak to Moses when they had gathered.
d) He would speak to Moses so that all may know that Moses was still the chosen leader.

3. “I will take of the Spirit that is upon you”

a) The Spirit of God was obviously upon Moses.
b) Taking of the Spirit that was upon Moses does not mean that he will have less power.

4. “And will put the same upon them”

a) The same Holy Spirit will be upon the seventy elders.
b) They will be anointed to serve alongside Moses.
c) But God would continue to speak to Moses as His specially chosen servant.
d) The seventy elders were not meant to replace Moses in any sense of the word.

5. “And they shall bear the burden of the people with you”

a) They will share the workload of Moses.
b) The workload was heavy enough to be called a “burden”.

6. “That you may not bear it yourself alone”

a) This was the Lord’s lovingkindness to Moses.
b) He would alleviate the burden that was upon his shoulders.
