"Through the Holy Spirit..."

Text: Acts 1:2

TRACING THE ACTIVITIES OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

We owe much to Luke, a physician by training, and a skilled writer whose talents the Lord used to write the Gospel of Luke and the Book of Acts. Luke wrote the Book of Acts as a sequel to the gospel that bore his name. In both books he traced the involvement of the Holy Spirit.

1. The subject of the Filling of the Holy Spirit in the Gospel of Luke

This subject must have fascinated Luke because he took notice of how the Spirit of God filled the lives of different people.

a) John
The Holy Spirit would fill the life of John the Baptiser from his birth (Luke 1:15).
b) Mary
He would come upon Mary and overshadow her with power (Luke 1:35).
c) Elizabeth
He filled the heart of Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptiser (Luke 1:41).
d) Zacharias
He also filled the heart of Zacharias after John was born (Luke 1:67).
e) Simeon
He filled the heart of just and devout Simeon (Luke 2:25).
f) The Lord Jesus Christ
i) He filled the Lord Jesus Christ with power for ministry (Luke 4:1,14).
ii) The Lord Jesus declared He was filled with the Holy Spirit (Luke 4:18).

2. The subject of the Filling of the Holy Spirit in the Book of Acts

a) The word of promise from the Lord Jesus Christ.
i) The Disciples would be baptised with the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:5).
ii) They will receive power when the Spirit of God came upon them (Acts 1:8).
b) The language may have been different but the meaning is the same.
i) They will be filled with the Holy Spirit.
ii) They will be empowered for life and ministry.
c) The Disciples were indeed filled with the Holy Spirit
i) The Disciples were given special powers.
ii) They were enabled to speak in foreign languages (Acts 2:4).

3. The significance

The significance was obvious. What the Lord Jesus Christ had taught and promised the Disciples were fulfilled. The Disciples would experience empowerment from the Spirit of God for their life and their ministry! The Disciples would experience the filling of the Holy Spirit again and again!
