Day 326

"Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory." Isaiah 6:3

Text: Exodus 33 : 20

THE PROFUNDITY OF THE GLORY OF GOD

The glory of God is a truly profound concept. Moses sensed that there was more to the glory of God than His power! The plagues of Egypt represented His power! The provision of God through the supply of manna and water represented His power too! The protection of Israel by day and by night significantly demonstrated His supreme power! But surely there was much more to God’s glory than His power! Moses sought to go where no other human being had gone! Could his request to see the full glory of God be met completely?

THE PROCLAMATION OF GOD’S NAME

God would reveal more than His power to Moses! He had once told Moses that His Name was “I AM THAT I AM.” He would now show Moses more about what His Name symbolized!

1. “I will make all My goodness pass before you”

How profound this thought was! God would somehow reveal to Moses all His goodness! What did that mean? Would it mean that Moses would feel God’s goodness washing over him as waves of the sea?

2. “I will proclaim the name of the LORD before you”

God had already spoken His name once before! Would there be a difference in speaking that Name? What would that really mean? Not even Moses could fully fathom what God had said!

3. “I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.”

Why did God make this statement? Was it because He knew that Moses would attempt to appeal to God’s grace and compassion to Israel once again? God had already been most gracious and compassionate to Israel!

There were aspects of the application of God’s grace and compassion that Moses had not fathomed! In fact, it must be said that there were aspects of God’s character that Moses could never fully comprehend, simply because he was but a mere human being!

THE FULL GLORY OF GOD

Did Moses want to see the full glory of God? Very kindly, God had to let Moses know that this particular request could not be fulfilled!

“You cannot see My face; for no man shall see Me, and live.”
EXODUS 33:20

Can man’s eyes look at the sun directly and not be blinded? Can man step into sub-zero atmosphere in outer space and live? Man cannot gaze at God’s face directly and live. Moses must accept this solemn truth!
