"And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God."

Text: Ephesians 6:17

THE WORD OF GOD IN PAUL’S MINSTRY

Another leading apostle in the first century was the apostle Paul. It was through both knowledge and experience that Paul described the word of God as the sword of the Spirit. The book of Acts well describes for us the way in which Paul ministered the word of God.

OTHER DESCRIPTIONS OF THE WORD OF GOD

It would be of great value if we take note of the way in which Paul regarded the word of God. Let us take note of the following texts. Six may be highlighted.

1. The word of God and salvation

“The word of this salvation” (Acts 13:26)

2. The word of God and Grace

“The word of His grace” (Acts 14:3; 20:32)

3. The word of the Gospel

“The Gospel” (Acts 14:7; 15:7)

4. The Old Testament prophetic books

“The words of the prophets agree, just as it is written” (Acts 15:15)

5. The word of the Lord Jesus

“The word of the Lord” (Acts 16:32; 19:10, 20)

6. The Scriptures

“Reasoned…from the Scriptures” (Acts 17:2; 18:4; 19:8)

STRONG THEOLOGY OF THE WORD OF GOD

Paul arrived at a strong theological understanding of the Scriptures. He penned down these words to pass on to Timothy, his protégé. Paul’s emphasis of the ministry of the Word stemmed from his understanding of the nature of the Word of God.

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God,
And is profitable for doctrine, for reproof,
For correction, for instruction in righteousness,
That the man of God may be complete,
Thoroughly equipped for every good work.
2 TIMOTHY 3:16-17

1. A deep faith in the inspiration of the Word of God

2. A deep commitment to the preaching and teaching of God’s word
