Ephesians
Day
Day 318

"Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might."

Text: Ephesians 6:10

BROTHERS-IN-ARMS

The word “brethren” (“adelphoi”) may be used in a number of ways:-

1. The word “adelphoi” may be used to describe siblings (real brothers).

2. It may be used to describe people who belong to a “brotherhood”.

3. It may be used to describe people who share a common faith.

4. It may also be used in a special way to describe “brothers in arms”.

Each application has its own significance. The context reveals the manner in which the word is to be read and appreciated. As Paul wrote this final section, his thoughts turned to the arena of spiritual warfare. He saw himself fighting alongside his Ephesian readers as a fellow-soldier, as a brother-in-arms.

A VETERAN IN SPIRITUAL WARFARE

Paul wrote as one who had deep spiritual experience in spiritual warfare. Two special experiences may be recalled.

1. Battling Elymas Bar-Jesus (Cf. Acts 13:1-12)

In Paul’s first missionary journey, he encountered tremendous opposition from a man called Elymas. This enemy of the faith sought to turn away the heart of the proconsul who had expressed interest in Paul’s message of salvation in Christ. Paul with solemn authority uttered these words.

O full of all deceit and all fraud,
you son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness,
will you not cease perverting the straight ways of the Lord?
And now, indeed, the hand of the Lord is upon you,
and you shall be blind, not seeing the sun for a time.
ACTS 13:10-11

2. Casting out a demon who has possessed a slave girl

In Philippi, Paul had to deal with a demonized slave-girl who went around, following Paul and generally making a nuisance of herself. This so agitated Paul that he rounded on the demonized girl and said,

I command you in the name of Jesus Christ
to come out of her.
And he came out that very hour
ACTS 16:18

Words from one who is a veteran in spiritual warfare bring courage to the heart!
