Ephesians
"Therefore He says: 'Awake, you who sleep; Arise from the dead, And Christ will give you light."
Text: Ephesians 5:14
THERE IS YET HOPE
Paul clearly distinguished between children of light and children of disobedience. In very clear tones, he exposed the unfruitful works of darkness. However, he did not at any time write off those who lived in darkness. Those who lived in darkness may yet forsake his sinful ways and find light and life in Christ.
“THEREFORE HE SAYS”
It is none other than God Himself who offers hope to those who live in darkness. Should the heart be convicted that pursuing the works of darkness would lead ultimately to death, one may still turn to this great God of grace and compassion. Salvation is still within reach. The kingdom of God is near at hand.
“AWAKE, YOU WHO SLEEP”
How gentle these words are! God well know the darkness of the abyss of sin. As if awaking a person from deep slumber, God speaks to the heart of all who would listen to Him.
“ARISE FROM THE DEAD”
The words are stronger now. To be “asleep” may be read as an euphemism. In any case, the power of God is available to all who would respond to this gentle word of invitation.
“CHRIST WILL GIVE YOU LIGHT”
The light that the Lord Jesus gives would be applied along the following lines. Three may be highlighted:-
