Ephesians

Day 273

"But all things that are exposed are made manifest by the light, for whatever makes manifest is light."

Text: Ephesians 5:13

ALL THINGS EXPOSED

The apostle Paul was most astute in pointing out a vital truth. He wrote of Light as the means of exposing “all things” (“ta panta”). What does this phrase include?

1. Works of darkness will be exposed

There is little need for more elaboration. Much has already been said about these unfruitful works of darkness.

2. Hypocrisy will also be exposed

Let us recall how Jesus exposed the scribes and the Pharisees who hypocritically pointed out the sins of others but ignored their own transgressions.

For they bind heavy burdens, hard to hear, and lay them
on men’s shoulders, but they themselves will not move them
with one of their fingers.
MATTHEW 23:4

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour
widow’s houses, and for a pretense make long prayers.
Therefore you will receive the greater condemnation.
MATTHEW 23:14

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!
For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cumin,
and have neglected the weightier matters of the law:
justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done,
without leaving the others undone.
MATTHEW 23:23

How easy it is to be tempted to pass judgment on people. How easy it is to use the Scriptures wrongly. The light of God will penetrate the most heavily veiled heart of the self-righteous hypocrite!

THE LIGHT THAT MAKES ALL THINGS MANIFEST

What did Paul have in mind when he wrote about the light that makes things manifest? These are some of the things that Paul could have borne in mind:-

1. The Lord Jesus as the Light

“I am the light of the world.” (John 9:5)

2. The word of God as Light

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105)

3. Believers as bearers of light

“Walk as children of light.” (Ephesians 5:8b)
