Ephesians

Ephesians
Day
Day 228

"And be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness."

Text: Ephesians 4:23-24

PUT ON THE NEW MAN

As important as it is to “put off the old man”, it is equally important to “put on the new man'”. It is not enough to put off the old sinful self. It is vital that every effort is made to understand what must be done in order to “put on the new man”.

1. The new man

a) This is a reference to the new nature that God has given to us when we trust in Christ as our Saviour.
b) This new nature explains the phrase “born again”. The new birth comes in the form of a new nature.

2. The call to “put on the new man”

a) It is a challenge to first understand what it means to be given “a new man”.
b) Then comes the challenge to cultivate the new man.
c) The new man (the new nature) is quite capable of defeating the old man.

CREATED ACCORDING TO GOD

The new birth may indeed be spoken of as a new creation by God. Paul wrote about this in his letter to the Corinthian church.

Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation;
old things have passed away;
behold, all things have become new.
2 CORINTHIANS 5:17

What a glorious promise we have in this text!

1. A new creation

a) We must not lose the wonder of what it means to experience this new work of God in our life.
b) Together with this wondrous work of God comes a great sense of hope for the future.

2. Old things have passed away

a) We do not have to feel defeated by sin anymore.
b) We can live triumphantly in and through the Lord Jesus Christ.
