Day 214

"For the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ."

Text: Ephesians 4:12

THE EQUIPPING OF THE SAINTS

The word “equip” (“katartismon”) was well chosen. This word suggests that every believer needs to be equipped for life and ministry. The verbal form of this word “equip” offers much illumination:-

1. Repairing work

Sometimes, equipping involves “repair”. This word is used to describe fishing nets being repaired.

2. Outfitting work

This word can also be used to speak of outfitting an expedition. Whatever it takes to outfit or equip would be undertaken.

3. Training work

This word can also be used to refer to a training process. The process of discipleship is one such work. The teacher’s task is to train and equip the believer to find great faith along the way.

AN EXAMPLE OF AN EQUIPPING PROGRAM

The apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers have one major common task. Their ultimate goal is to equip the saints. A basic equipping program may be run along the following lines:-

1. Laying of foundations

a) The individual understands and appreciates who God is.
b) He recognizes the problem of sin and the need of salvation.
c) He comes to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ as Saviour.
d) He yields his life to worship and serve the Lord Jesus Christ.

2. A Discipleship program

a) He understands that he needs to grow.
b) He learns to feed on God’s word.
c) He learns how to relate to the Spirit of God.
d) He seeks the filling of the Holy Spirit.
