Day 129

"Do it with your might"

Text: Ecclesiastes 9:10

WISE AND APPROPRIATE APPLICATION

Solomon’s approach in seeking to understand life had practical and positive applications! His word of admonition is sound.

“Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might;
for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom
in the grave where you are going.”
Ecclesiastes 9:10

1. “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might”

a) “Whatever your hand finds to do”

i) This may refer to fulfilling life’s responsibilities.

ii) It may be a reference to one’s profession or vocation.

iii) It may also be a reference to “extra” work that one may be inclined to doing (non-remunerative).

iv) This may be different for each person.

b) “Do it with your might”

i) Do that piece of work with enthusiasm.

ii) It is appropriate to do work responsibly and well.

iii) The word “might” suggests “whole-heartedness”.

iv) It is good to commit all our strength and energy to doing something well.

v) Half-hearted effort is not the way to do anything.

We are reminded of an old axiom.
“If there is anything worth doing, it is worth doing it well.”

2. “For there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going”
a) The reality of the grave is once again to be borne in mind.

b) In the grave:

i) There is “no work”.

ii) There is “no device”.

iii) There is “no knowledge”.

iv) There is “no wisdom”.

3. Recall what the Apostle Paul wrote

“And whatever you do, do it heartily,
as to the Lord and not to men.”
Colossians 3:23
