"Therefore I hated life"

Text: Ecclesiastes 2:17

FIGHTING NEGATIVITY

Solomon had been actively engaged in discovering and researching the meaning of “Life”. But as he came to the inevitability of death, he found himself feeling very negative.

“Therefore, I hated life because
the work that was done under the sun was distressing to me,
for all is vanity and grasping for the wind.”
Ecclesiastes 2:17

1. “Therefore”

a) This is an inferential particle.
b) After all his research, he came to a dismal conclusion.
c) Death was the end of everything:
i) End of pleasures.
ii) End of achievements.
iii) End of fame.
iv) There is no remembrance of anything.
v) Death brought in a sense of utter futility.

2. “I hated life”

a) This is a statement of great despair.
b) The word “hate” carries with it a great sense of negativity.
i) It is the opposite of “love”.
ii) The love of living had taken a hard hit.
iii) The sense of joy that comes with success was all but totally gone.

3. The terrible ramifications that accompanied this sense of “hatred”

a) All the work that had been enjoyed was now “distressing”.
b) The feeling of “vanity” was not easy to get rid of.
c) “Vanity” was like “grasping the wind”.
i) That is impossible.
ii) This makes one feel helpless.
iii) There is a sense of hopelessness.
