"Luke the beloved physician..."

Text: Colossians 4:14

FURTHER COMMENDATION

Paul’s heart must have been very full as he concluded his epistle to the Colossians. He must have felt greatly blessed!

“Luke the beloved physician and Demas greet you.
Greet the brethren who are in Laodicea,
and Nymphas and the church that is in his house.”

Colossians 4:14-15

1. Luke the physician

a) He was beloved of Paul.
b) He was the one who wrote two books:-
i) The Gospel of Luke
ii) The Book of Acts
c) He travelled with Paul on some of his journeys.
d) He must have attended to Paul as his personal physician on occasions.
e) A strong relationship existed between them and he was dearly loved by Paul.

2. Demas

a) At this point of time Demas was with Paul.
b) Paul graciously added his name and sent greetings on his behalf to the Colossians.
c) Years down the road Demas forsook Paul, choosing to return to the world (2 Timothy 4:10).

3. Sending greeting to other people

a) The brethren in Laodicea
i) This indicates the closeness of ties among some of the churches.
ii) They maintained good contact with each other.
b) Nymphas
i) Little is known of him.
ii) He apparently held worship in his house.
iii) He had what we may term “a house church”.
iv) This was quite the norm in the first century.
v) Huge church edifices were non-existent in the first few centuries.
(Christians were under great persecution then.)
