"Walk in wisdom..."

Text: Colossians 4:5

THE SEARCH FOR WISDOM

The Scriptures were written expressly to help people gain wisdom. Words of exhortation to seek wisdom may be found in many passages in both the Old and New Testaments.

WALK IN WISDOM

The apostle Paul extended this thought further. He urged his readers to translate wisdom in their Christian walk.

“Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside,
redeeming the time.”

Colossians 4:5

THE WISDOM PAUL SPEAKS ABOUT

The wisdom that Paul speaks about is quite specific. It is not worldly wisdom at all.

1. Hidden in Christ

a) Knowledge of God is to be found in and through Christ (Colossians 2:2).
b) All the treasures of knowledge and wisdom are to be found in Christ (Colossians 2:3).

2. Committed to teaching knowledge of Christ

a) On the one hand
i) False wisdom must be exposed and rejected (Colossians 2:23).
ii) People must know that they are of no value (Colossians 2:23).
b) On the other hand
i) Wisdom must be employed in teaching people about Christ (Colossians 1:28).
ii) The goal is to have believers grow towards full maturity (Colossians 1:28).

THE CHRISTIAN WALK

Acquisition of wisdom is encouraged! But wisdom must be applied in real-life and in real time.

1. “Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside”

a) How we live our life in the world is emphasised here.
b) We can make an impact on the world when we walk in wisdom.
c) We might be able to lead people to Christ when we walk in wisdom.

2. “Redeeming the time”

a) Wisdom teaches us how to value time.
b) Time is always too limited to be squandered on useless pursuits.
c) Time must be “redeemed”, that is, made good use of!
