"Put on the new man..."

Text: Colossians 3:10

TRUE AND SOLID FOUNDATIONS

It is always wonderful to discover something that is true! The apostles of the Lord Jesus Christ were tasked to establish a true and solid Christian foundation. A true faith is best evidenced when it is lived out.

“And have put on the new man who is renewed in
knowledge according to the image of Him who created him.”

Colossians 3:10

1. “And have put on”

a) The imagery used is that of putting on clothes.
b) This imagery is stretched and applied to the new nature God has given to the believer.

2. “The new man”

a) This is to be read in contrast to “the old man” in Colossians 3:9.
b) The new man
i) This is a reference to the new nature that God has given.
ii) The believer is now a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17).
iii) The “old man” has been put off and in its place a “new man” has emerged.

3. Features of the new man

a) One aspect highlighted: Knowledge.
i) Deep knowledge is in view.
ii) The new man is capable of deep knowledge of God.
iii) The regenerate man desires to grow deep in his knowledge of his faith in God.
b) An even more important feature is highlighted: The Image of God.
i) God made man in his image (Genesis 1:26-27).
ii) However that image was badly tarnished because of sin.
iii) Through salvation in Christ the believer is remade.
iv) The model is still the same- In God’s image!
v) The icon (image) God used was the Lord Jesus Christ Himself (Colossians 1:15).

4. Important Considerations

a) How much have we grown in our knowledge of Christ?
b) How much do we reflect the image of Christ in our life?
