Struggles With Deep Teaching

Text: Colossians 2:13

Paul understood the great struggle his readers must have as they grappled with these deep teachings. They were vital truths that are worth grappling with till they are fully comprehended!

“And you, being dead in your trespasses and the
uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive
together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses.”
Colossians 2:13

1. Do these truths apply to Gentiles?

a) The answer is “Yes!”
b) Reference to Gentiles may be found in the phrase “the uncircumcision of your flesh”.

2. Do these truths apply to people who are spiritually “dead”?

a) The answer is “Yes!”
b) Trespasses will cause one to be spiritually dead.
i) This truth would apply to Jews.
ii) This truth would apply to Gentiles too.

3. A special work of God

a) Paul made reference to “the working of God” in Colossians 2:12.
b) This is further elaborated here in Colossians 2:13.
i) God notes that there was spiritual deadness.
ii) He further notes that it comes from trespasses.
iii) He shows great grace and mercy and forgives all trespasses.
iv) He goes further and makes alive those who are spiritually dead.

4. Appropriating these spiritual truths

a) Faith must be exercised (Colossians 2:12).
b) Through faith these truths become reality.
i) Through humble eyes of faith we recognise our sinfulness and confess our sins.
ii) Through a grateful heart of faith we receive Jesus as our Saviour and Lord.
iii) Through faith we receive forgiveness of sins.
iv) Through faith we come alive to God.
v) Through faith we identify with deep gratitude our great indebtedness to Christ Jesus.
