Prayer As An Integral Part Of Life And Ministry

Text: Colossians 1:9

The apostle Paul’s opening words in his epistle to the Colossians were couched in prayer (Colossians 1:3). Prayer was an integral part of Paul’s life and ministry. The prayer that Paul offered on behalf of the Colossians is worth studying in depth!

“For this reason we also, since the day we heard it,
do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may
be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and
spiritual understanding.”

Colossians 1:9

1. “For this reason”

a) It may also be translated “because of this” (Greek: “dis touto”).
b) What was the reason that caused Paul to pray for the Colossians?
c) Essentially their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ (Colossians 1:4).
i) This faith was obtained through knowledge of God’s word (Colossians 1:5-8).
ii) This faith produced good fruit (Colossians 1:4, 6-7).

2. “We also, since the day we heard it”

a) Epaphras had been keeping Paul in touch concerning his ministry in Colosse.
b) Paul and his fellow-workers had been keeping an active interest in the growth of the Church.

3. “Do not cease to pray for you”

a) Prayer had become natural to Paul.
b) Prayer was a very significant part of his life and ministry.
c) Effective prayer must include this aspect- “to pray without ceasing.”
i) Diligence in prayer
ii) Faithfulness in prayer

4. Prayer offered up on behalf of the Colossians

a) To be filled with the knowledge of God’s will.
i) This will is to be found in knowing the Scriptures.
ii) The will of God may be discerned over time.
b) In all wisdom and spiritual understanding.
i) Spiritual insight is in mind.
ii) Spiritual sensitivity is also in view here.
