The Work Of Redemption

Text: Colossians 1:20

The apostle Paul took great pains to present the work of redemption Christ came to do. Three aspects may highlighted:-

1. It involves deliverance from the power of darkness (Colossians 1:13).

2. It results in being conveyed into the kingdom of the Lord Jesus Christ (Colossians 1:13).

3. There is full forgiveness of sins (Colossians 1:14).

THE WORK OF RECONCILIATION

There was another piece of work that Paul highlighted. The following text has great richness of thought.

“And by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him,
whether things on earth or things in heaven,
having made peace through the blood of His cross.”
Colossians 1:20

1. “By Him”

a) This is a reference to the Lord Jesus Christ.
b) Another preposition may be even more effective in describing the work of reconciliation “through Him”.

2. “To reconcile”

a) The hostility and enmity must first be removed.
b) Forgiveness of sin is offered.
c) The offer of redemption included.
i) Full reconciliation has been made possible.
ii) The believer is not just a forgiven sinner.
iii) The believer is a fully reconciled child of God.
iv) He is a partaker of the heavenly inheritance God has set aside for His children.
d) There is full pardon and peace.

3. The extent of Christ’s work

a) It is gloriously far-reaching.
b) Its extensiveness is described gloriously.
i) It reaches all the earth.
ii) It reaches heaven.
