Knowledge And Wisdom

Text: Colossians 1:10

Knowledge is always good. But wisdom and spiritual understanding must be added to knowledge. The latter heightens the significance of knowledge. The will of God can only be properly discerned through wisdom and spiritual understanding and not mere knowledge!

Knowledge can be obtained fairly easily. However wisdom and spiritual understanding can only come through the revelation of the Spirit of God. Comprehension of the will of God must be carefully sought through humble prayer.

THE PURPOSE OF COMPREHENDING GOD’S WILL

What is the purpose of comprehending God’s will? Paul explains this in the following text.

“That you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him,
being fruitful in every good work and increasing
in the knowledge of God.”

Colossians 1:10

1. “That you may walk worthy of the Lord”

a) This is to be read as a purpose clause.
b) To walk worthy of the Lord is a great purpose to have in our heart.
c) The salvation that God has given to us ought to cause us to walk worthy of His calling.

2. Three considerations as to how we may walk worthy of the Lord

a) “Fully pleasing Him”
i) The redeemed should no longer live in sin.
ii) Neither should he live to please himself.
iii) His new focus ought to be how he may please God.
iv) Wisdom and spiritual understanding will help the believer.
b) “Being fruitful in every work”
i) Initial fruit was seen in the lives of the Colossians.
ii) But they could be even more fruitful for the Lord.
iii) Wisdom and understanding will help a person become more fruitful.
iv) A wise believer can become fruitful in every good work.
c) “And increasing in the knowledge of God”
i) There is a huge amount of knowledge to acquire.
ii) The believer should focus on seeking to increase his knowledge of God.
iii) A deeply knowledgeable believer will be that much more able to walk worthy of the Lord.
