Day 96

"He who touches the earth and it melts"

Text: Amos 9:5

THE MIGHTY LORD GOD

The sinful nation of Israel had forsaken the Lord their God in favour of deities they deemed far more powerful. They could not be more wrong!

“The Lord GOD of hosts,
He who touches the earth and it melts,
And all who dwell there mourn;
All of it shall swell like the River,
And subside like the River of Egypt.
He who builds His layers in the sky,
And has founded His strata in the earth;
Who calls for the waters of the sea,
And pours them out on the face of the earth-
The LORD is His name.”
Amos 9:5-6

1. Different deities worshipped

a) Golden calves were promoted as the gods of Israel (1 Kings 12:28).
b) Baal-worship was also introduced by Ahab and Jezebel (1 Kings 16:31 – deity of the Sidonians)
c) They had 450 prophets devoted to serving Baal in the reign of Ahab (1 Kings 18:22).

These visible idols were worshipped because they were deemed more powerful than the invisible God of Israel.

2. The Lord God of hosts… the LORD is His name

a) Israel had all but forgotten the name of the Lord God.
b) His name represented His mighty sovereign power.

3. The matchless things that the Lord God could do

a) The Creator God controls the earth and its Rivers.
i) He can cause the earth to melt by merely touching it.
ii) He can affect the mighty River Nile.
iii) The Nile was worshiped by the ancient Egyptian.
iv) Those who depended on the River Nile would mourn if the seasonal floods did not occur as expected!
b) The Creator God controls the skies above.
i) He builds layers in the sky.
ii) Basic information today- (The atmosphere, stratosphere)
c) The Creator God controls the strata of the earth and the seas.

The name of the Lord God of hosts is be feared and given total reverence!
