"He will break the great house into bits"

Text: Amos 6:11

A GRAVE COMMAND OF THE LORD

Amos had to give this solemn command of the Lord concerning the nation of Israel! Many chances had been given to the nation to repent and to seek the Lord. All efforts had been in vain. The rejection of the Lord and His word could only result in this fearful commandment!

“For behold, the LORD gives a command:
He will break the great house into bits,
And the little house into pieces.”
Amos 6:11

1. “For behold”

a) This often signals an alarming, and unexpected word.
b) Nevertheless, this solemn word would come to pass.

2. “The LORD gives a command”

a) This grim word came from the LORD God Himself.
b) There were many good words given in the past.
i) To seek the Lord and live (Amos 5:4).
ii) To seek good and not evil (Amos 5:14).
iii) These had been ignored and set aside.
c) The only word now was a “command” from the LORD.

3. “He will break the great house into bits”

a) This would be a reference to the rich and powerful.
b) They had built palaces and lived in decadent luxury.
c) They had ignored the plight of the weak and down-trodden.
d) In fact, they had bullied them, abusing their powers and authority.
e) They believed that their houses were too great to be broken by anybody.
f) They had not reckoned with the Lord and His mighty powers.
g) The Lord Himself would break and destroy the great houses.

4. “And the little house into pieces”

a) The “little house” would refer to the unrepentant wicked.
b) Their sins may not have been as heinous but they were just as unrepentant and thus guilty.
c) They may have assisted “the great house” in the perpetration of evil deeds.
d) The little houses would not be spared by the Lord. He would break them into pieces!
