"Also it was I who brought you up from the land of Egypt"

Text: Amos 2:10

THE GREAT DELIVERANCE FROM EGYPT

Israel had sadly forgotten how the Lord had wondrously delivered the nation from mighty Egypt! He had to remind them of this great deliverance!

“Also it was I who brought you up from the land of Egypt,
And led you forty years through the wilderness,
To possess the land of the Amorite.”
Amos 2:10

1. “Also it was I who brought you up from the land of Egypt”

a) “Also” suggests that there is a strong link between Amos 2:9 and 10.
b) It was the Lord who destroyed the Amorites.
c) It was also the Lord who brought Israel up from the land of Egypt.

2. The lessons God intended Israel to learn

a) That He was fulfilling the promise He made to Abram (Genesis 15:12-21; Exodus 2:24-25).
b) That He was the LORD their God (Exodus 6:1-8).
i) He would rescue them from their bondage.
ii) He would redeem them.
iii) He would take them as His people.
iv) He would bring them into the Land of Canaan which He swore He would give to the descendants of Abraham.
c) They were to relate to the Lord their God.
i) They were to fear Him
ii) And to love Him (Deuteronomy 6:1-5).

3. “And led you for forty years through the wilderness, to possess the land of the Amorite”

a) What was the wilderness like?
i) It was described as a terrible wilderness.
ii) There were scorpions and serpents.
iii) It was a thirsty land that had no water (Deuteronomy 8:15).
b) God’s leading:
i) Provision of manna.
ii) Water from flinty rocks (Deuteronomy 8:15).
c) God had to destroy the Amorite kingdom before Israel could inherit the land of Canaan.
