"I will send a fire upon the wall of Tyre..."

Text: Amos 1:10

THE DESTRUCTION OF TYRE

The judgment made against Tyre was very briefly mentioned. Tyre was mentioned and given extensive coverage by Isaiah and Ezekiel (Isaiah 23; Ezekiel 26-28). The transgressions of Tyre were many and severe!

“But I will send a fire upon the wall of Tyre,
Which shall devour its palaces.”
Amos 1:10

1. “Wall of Tyre”

a) Like other ancient cities, Tyre had mighty walls.
b) But that would not give them any protection from God’s judgment.

2. “I will send a fire… which shall devour its palaces”

a) The word “fire” is a symbol of God’s judgment.
b) Fire can have a cleansing effect (Isaiah 6 where a fiery coal cleansed Isaiah’s lips).
c) In this case, the fire symbol is one of total destruction.
d) This prophecy was fulfilled when Nebuchadnezzar conquered this region in the sixth century.

3. The many transgressions of Tyre (Isaiah 23; Ezekiel 26-28)

The following sins may be highlighted:

a) Gloating Ezekiel 26:2
b) Conceit Ezekiel 27:3
c) Arrogance Ezekiel 28:2
d) Violence Ezekiel 28:16
e) Multitude of iniquities Ezekiel 28:18
f) Corruption of wisdom Ezekiel 28:17
g) Iniquity of trading Ezekiel 28:18

4. The punishment to be meted out

a) Chaldeans (Babylonians) would bring about the destruction of Tyre and Sidon (Isaiah 23:13; Ezekiel 26:7-12)
b) Pestilence Ezekiel 28:23
c) The sword Ezekiel 28:23

5. Allusion to Satan

Tyre was filled with conceit and arrogance. It became so prosperous and wealthy that Tyre thought of itself as having Divine qualities. The passage in Ezekiel 28:11-15 may be seen as an allusion to Satan in his arrogance and his disdain of God!
