"He will not cry out, nor raise His voice..."

Text: Isaiah 42:2

HOW THE SPIRIT OF GOD WOULD AFFECT THE LIFE OF THE MESSIAH-SERVANT

The Spirit of God would come upon the Messiah to anoint Him for His ministry as the Servant of the Lord! That would be essential. However, He would do more than that! He would affect His character and personality too!

“He will not cry out, nor raise His voice,
Nor cause His voice to be heard in the street.
A bruised reed He will not break,
And smoking flax He will not quench;
He will bring forth justice for truth.
He will not fail nor be discouraged…”
Isaiah 42:2-4a

1. The voice of the Messiah

a) This will reflect His character and personality.
b) What He will not do: –
i) He will not cry out.
ii) He will not raise His voice.
iii) He will not cause His voice to be heard in the street.
c) In today’s language:-
i) He will not lose His temper.
ii) He will not resort to shouting at people.
iii) He will not intimidate people with an aggressive and disagreeable behavior.

2. His nature

a) A bruised reed would be thrown away as useless.
But the Messiah would be kind and gracious.
b) “And smoking flax He will not quench”
A similar idea is expressed. The Messiah would not cast away the weak who come to Him.

3. His strength

a) He will be focused on delivering justice for the sake of truth.
b) He will bring forth justice even to the Gentiles.
c) He will not be discouraged even if the work is hard.

THE POWER OF THE SPIRIT

All that the Messiah-Servant will be must be understood in the light of God’s upholding power. The Spirit of God will fulfill His role in strengthening the heart, mind and spirit of the Messiah-Servant. He will not fail in His life and ministry! God was correct when He said, “Behold! My Servant whom I uphold!”
