"It is written again..."

Text: Matthew 4:7

THE STRONG AND SWIFT REPLY FROM JESUS

Jesus saw through the ploy of the Devil immediately. He answered with great calmness and authority.

“Jesus said to him, ‘It is written again,
“You shall not tempt the LORD your God.”‘”
Matthew 4:7

1. “It is written again”

a) A fundamental mistake made by the devil.
b) Jesus saw the mistake made.
i) Scriptures cannot clash with each other.
ii) The Lord Himself is the Ultimate Author.
iii) If Jesus had done what Satan had suggested, the Scriptures would be in conflict.

2. “You shall not tempt the LORD your God”

a) This was the most basic of premises.
b) One does not tempt (test) the Lord at any time.
c) To jump down from the pinnacle would be to test the Lord God.

3. The ministry of angels

a) They do indeed serve the Lord God.
b) They do His bidding.
c) They will come to the rescue of God’s children.

4. The circumstances where the angels of God are not obliged to respond

a) When we foolishly place ourselves in harm’s way.
b) When we are presumptuous.
c) When it is clearly not within the will of God.
d) Jumping off the pinnacle of the temple would certainly be against the will of God.

KNOWLEDGE OF THE WORD OF GOD

The knowledge of the Lord Jesus was vast and formidable! How well He knew the Scriptures! What a challenging example to emulate Him.

1. A general knowledge of the Scriptures is insufficient.

2. There must be deep and precise understanding of the word of God.

3. The fear of the Lord must be instilled within us. We will then not tempt the Lord our God.
