"The Son of God..."

Text: Matthew 4:3

JESUS, THE SON OF GOD

Jesus was indeed the Son of God. This was wonderfully acknowledged by the Father at His baptism.

“This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.”
Matthew 3:17

The Apostle John wrote extensively about Jesus being the Son of God. The following may be highlighted: –

1. Jesus was the only begotten Son of God who was sent to save the world (John 3:16-18).

2. He is the authoritative Son of God who will judge the living and the dead one day (John 5:25-30).

3. He is the Christ (The Messiah), the Son of the living God (John 6:69).

4. In His being the Son of God, He and His Father are one (John 10:30).

5. Jesus did not think it was robbery to be equal with God (Philippians 2:6).

JESUS, THE SON OF MAN

But Jesus was also the Son of Man. This was all part of God’s salvation plan!

1. He put on flesh; the living word had become fully Man (John 1:14).

2. Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself (Philippians 2:8).

3. It was as Man that Jesus felt hunger after fasting for 40 days.

4. But as Man He has no right.

a) To turn stones into bread.
b) His part was to obey God.
c) He must learn how to humble Himself before God.
d) God had not given Him a word that allowed Him to turn stones into bread.
e) Thus He would not abuse His powers as the Son of God to turn stones into bread.

A DEEP UNDERSTANDING OF THE WORD OF GOD

Jesus obviously knew the Word of God thoroughly. There are many lessons that we may derive from reading Deuteronomy 8:1-3, the text from which Jesus extracted the words to answer the Devil.

1. Every word must be carefully observed (Deuteronomy 8:1).

2. Man would be tested as to what is in his heart in the circumstances of life (Deuteronomy 8:2).

3. Man is sometimes allowed to hunger to see if he would keep God’s commandments (Deuteronomy 8:3).

4. Man must learn to live by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God (Deuteronomy 8:3).

5. The Son of Man would heed this word and live by the Word of God (Matthew 4:4).

6. He loved His Father and He would always choose to obey every word of His (Matthew 4:4).
