STRONG ENDORSEMENT

The Apostle John gave strong words of encouragement and endorsement in this text.

“We therefore ought to receive such,
that we may become fellow workers for the truth.”
3 John 8

1. “We therefore ought to receive such”

a) John was endorsing two main things:-
i) The missionary enterprise.
ii) The support of such missionary activities.
b) “We therefore ought”
i) Strong support expressed.
ii) The word “ought” underscores John’s strong endorsement.
iii) There is a strong hint of an obligation on this phrase.

2. “That we may become fellow workers”

a) John now focuses on the results.
b) When we support missionary endeavours we are partakers of their work.
c) We are “fellow-workers” of the missionary effort.

3. “For the truth”

a) Key to the missionary enterprise is “truth”.
b) John was always deeply committed to the truth.
i) It was to be proclaimed.
ii) It was to be defended.
iii) It was to be lived out.

SUPPORT FOR MISSIONARY WORK

It was the Lord Jesus Christ who gave the commandment to go into all the world to preach the Gospel (Matthew 28:19-20).

1. The early NT Church certainly was deeply committed to reaching people with the Gospel message.

2. Missionary endeavours were launched, in particular by the Apostle Paul.

3. Support for these endeavours ought to be taken up by the church.

4. There ought to be a strong and keen sense of support for Missionary work. This is a work that is truly worth doing in the sight of God!
