Day 7

"Who have borne witness of your love before the church."

Text: 3 John 6

BEARING WITNESS

The concept of bearing witness is essentially two-fold. We are familiar with the command to bear witness of our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ (Acts 1:8). The following text is the second aspect of bearing witness.

“Who have borne witness of your love before the church.
If you send them forward on their journey in a manner worthy of God,
you will do well.”
3 John 6

1. “Who have borne witness”

a) This would be a reference to those who have benefitted from Gaius’ benevolence.
b) These bear witness before the church of the good deeds of Gaius.

2. “Your love before the church”

a) What stood out was not the money expended.
b) What stood out was the love of Gaius.
i) The manner of love
ii) The extent of love displayed

3. “If you send them forward on their journey”

a) This statement gives us an idea of how Gaius must have shown support.
b) What did Gaius do?
i) He supported those who were serving the Lord.
ii) These may have been itinerant preachers.
iii) They may not have sufficient support.
iv) Gaius took it upon himself to “send them forward”.
v) The phrase “on their journey” is the implied meaning.

4. “In a manner worthy of God”

a) The deeds of Gaius were truly “worthy”.
b) John was giving high praise to Gaius.
c) His deeds if examined by God Himself would have been found to be “worthy”.

5. “You will do well”

a) John was commending Gaius.
b) His actions speak well of him. He will do well indeed before God and the church!
