Introduction

AN INTRODUCTION

1. The writings of the Apostle John

It is not unlikely that the Apostle John wrote extensively. Tradition credits him with the following: –

a) The Gospel of John.
b) A general letter called “1 John“.
c) A short letter addressed to “an elect lady” called “2 John“.
d) Another short letter written to a dear friend Gaius, called “3 John“.

2. The significance of these letters

a) They reveal much about the author.
b) They offer glimpses of the many challenges that existed in the first century.
c) The doctrines of the Lord are brought illuminating prominence.
d) They offer much food for thought and reflection.

3. Our reading of 3 John

a) John surfaced a problem of church difficulties in the first century.
b) The problems they faced are not dissimilar to the ones we sometimes come across.
c) We can learn valuable lessons from a careful reading of this short letter from the hand of the Apostle John.

4. The last of John’s extant letters

a) 3 John is the third and last extant letter credited to the Apostle John.
b) The heart and soul of this esteemed servant of God is once again bared to his readers.
