"Turned aside to fables."

Text: 2 Timothy 4:4

THE DANGER OF TURNING AWAY FROM THE TRUTH

The danger of turning away from the Lord and from the truth was a problem that ancient Israel fell into. Israel ended turning to idolatrous worship and turned their back on God. The apostle Paul saw this same danger threatening the Church. Thus he warned Timothy to take careful heed of his ministry to teach and to proclaim the truth.

“And they will turn their ears away from the truth,
and be turned aside to fables.”
2 Timothy 4:4

SOME REASONS WHY PEOPLE TURN AWAY FROM THE TRUTH

There are many common reasons why people turn away from the truth. The following may be highlighted:-

1. When people are not genuine believers.

2. The parable of the Sower comes to mind.

a) There are some whose hearts are so hardened the word of God makes no impact.
b) There are some who are shallow and they do not last.
c) There are others who get distracted by the world and ultimately they give up their faith.

3. There are many “believers” who are caught up with other problems.

a) They have not moved away from their carnality (1 Corinthians 1-3).
b) There are some who remain in the state of immaturity (Hebrews 5).
c) Many are not aware of the deadly and subtle attacks of the Evil One and thus they succumb and they end up turning away from the truth.
i) He will send false apostles (2 Corinthians 11:13-15).
ii) His workers are able to perform lying signs and wonders (2 Thessalonians 2:9-10).
