"That the man of God may be complete..."

Text: 2 Timothy 3:17

 

THE NEW LIFE WE HAVE IN CHRIST

God had very clear goals when He gave salvation to man. Through the Lord Jesus Christ, a person is “born again”, and given a new life. Through the help of the Holy Spirit, the believer is enabled to live most meaningfully.

VERY CLEAR GOALS

The Scriptures were inspired by God so that they can help the believer achieve great and lofty goals.

“That the man of God may be complete,
thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
2 Timothy 3:17

1. “That”

a) This particle introduces the idea of a goal.
b) The Scriptures were given with definite goals in mind.

2. “The man of God”

a) This may be used generally to describe a true believer.
b) It is often used to describe a good servant of God.
i) Elijah was called “a man of God” (2 Kings 1:9, 11).
ii) Timothy was also called “man of God” by the apostle Paul (1 Timothy 6:11).

3. “May be complete”

a) This word describes a person who is “fully equipped”.
b) He has been well instructed in the Scriptures.
c) His life reflects good features of true personal righteousness.

4. “Thoroughly equipped”

a) The phrase “thoroughly equipped” is related to the word “complete”.
b) They share the same roots.
c) This phrase describes the following:-
i) It describes a person who has been well and thoroughly equipped.
ii) He has had full training in the word of the Lord.
iii) It shows in his life for he reflects good practical personal righteousness.
iv) The whole process may actually take years.

5. The man of God is now equipped for every good work

Thus the true servant of God fulfils the goals for which the Scriptures were written!
