"From childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures..."

Text: 2 Timothy 3:15

A LIFE-TIME OF LEARNING

Timothy may have had a Greek father who may not have been a believer. However he had a mother and a grandmother who ensured that Timothy had every opportunity to learn the Scriptures well.

“And that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures,
which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith
which is in Christ Jesus.”

2 Timothy 3:15

1. “And that from childhood”

a) This is a reference to the upbringing of Timothy.
b) A good Jewish upbringing would see Timothy being taught about God from childhood.
c) There may have been struggles for Timothy’s father was Greek.

2. “Known the Holy Scriptures”

a) All Jewish boys would have to learn the Scriptures well from a very young age.
b) However Timothy was not circumcised till he was an adult.
c) Paul wisely advised Timothy to undergo circumcision if he hoped to minister to Jews.
d) Timothy complied and was circumcised on Paul’s advice (Acts 16:3).

3. “Which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus”

a) The Scriptures and the doctrine of sin
i) They point out that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23).
ii) They also highlight that the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23).
b) The Scriptures and the doctrine of salvation
i) They would highlight the salvation that the Lord Jesus Christ offers.
ii) Jesus had come into the world to save sinners.
c) The Scriptures and the doctrine of faith
i) God’s grace extends salvation to all mankind.
ii) However faith in the Lord Jesus Christ as Saviour must be exercised.
d) The Scriptures and its relevance to life
i) They are able to give wisdom.
ii) They are able to help us comprehend our need of a Saviour.
iii) Wisdom is given to recognise our need for the Lord in our life.
