2 Timothy
"Remember that Jesus Christ, of the seed of David..."
Text: 2 Timothy 2:8
A STRONG CHRISTOLOGY
The Apostle Paul developed a very strong Christological emphasis in his theology. The following text is an example of this focus.
“Remember that Jesus Christ, of the seed of David,
was raised from the dead according to my gospel.”
2 Timothy 2:8
1. “Remember”
a) This was written as an imperative.
b) Timothy was strongly reminded to recall how Paul preached the Lord Jesus Christ in his gospel.
2. “Jesus Christ”
a) Technically this is not the name of Jesus.
b) Paul presented Jesus… as “the Christ”.
i) Jesus was the Anointed One of God.
ii) Jesus was the Messiah prophesied in the Scriptures.
3. “Of the seed of David”
a) The Christ had to be of the seed of David.
b) Jesus was from the seed of David.
c) From this kingly line, Jesus was proclaimed as The Son of David, the heir to the Davidic throne.
4. “Was raised from the dead”
a) Jesus was crucified and then buried.
b) But He was raised from the dead.
c) The resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ was deemed critical in Paul’s presentation of the gospel. (In 1 Corinthians 15 Paul argued very strongly for the doctrine of the resurrection.)
d) Even in the days of Paul there were some who had denied the significance of the resurrection.
