"The lawless one will be revealed..."
Text: 2 Thessalonians 2:8
THE REVELATION OF THE LAWLESS ONE
The apostle Paul went on to write about the revelation of the lawless one. However in the same breath, he wrote about how he would be destroyed by the Return of the Lord Jesus.
“And then the lawless one will be revealed,
whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth
and destroy with the brightness of His coming.”
2 Thessalonians 2:8
1. “And then the lawless one will be revealed”
a) The lawless one
i) He will have no regard for law and order.
ii) He has no regard for God’s law.
iii) He has no regard for human law either.
iv) He will be a law to himself.
b) Revelation
i) When the Restrainer has been taken away.
ii) The lawless one will be able to do what he likes.
2. “Whom the Lord will consume… and destroy”
a) The lawless one will have only a limited time to assert his power.
b) His doom is assured.
i) He will be consumed.
ii) He will be destroyed.
3. The destruction of the lawless one
a) “The Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth”
i) All He needs to do is to speak a word against the lawless one.
ii) The lawless one will be consumed at that very moment.
b) “The brightness of His coming”
i) This is a glorious way of describing the Return of the Lord Jesus.
ii) “Brightness” represents the power and glory of the Lord.
iii) The Second Coming of Christ will be marked by “brightness”.
iv) It will effectively destroy the darkness of the lawless one.
