"It is a righteous thing with God..."

Text: 2 Thessalonians 1:6

THE PREROGATIVE OF GOD

The apostle Paul introduces to us “the prerogative of God” in the following text. This is an enlightening word indeed.

“Since it is a righteous thing with God
to repay with tribulation those who trouble you,
and to give you who are troubled rest with us
when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels.”

2 Thessalonians 1:6-7

1. The prerogative of God

a) To exercise Divine justice.
b) To exercise Divine power.

2. “It is a righteous thing with God”

a) It stems from the fact that God is righteous in His being.
b) His actions would display His righteousness.

3. “To repay with tribulation”

a) God is within His right to “repay”.
b) Those who cause tribulation to befall on others must be prepared that they too can experience tribulation.

4. “Those who trouble you”

a) There was no reason for such wickedness to be meted out.
b) Wickedness will be judged.
c) God reserves the right to cause the wicked to experience tribulation.

5. “And to give you who are troubled rest with us”

a) The troubled will naturally seek rest.
b) God will give rest.
i) Immediately (as Paul found rest; literally “relief”)
ii) Ultimately (in the future)

6. “When the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels”

a) This is a reference to the Second Coming of Christ.
b) There will be ultimate “rest” (relief).
