"Making them an example"

Text: 2 Peter 2:6

A THIRD EXAMPLE

There were numerous examples of God’s judgment in the Scriptures. Peter cited a third one.

“And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes,
condemned them to destruction,
making them an example to those who afterward would live ungodly.”
2 Peter 2:6

1. “And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes”

a) This judgment was recorded in Genesis 18-19.

b) Abraham pleaded earnestly that God would spare the two cities if there were
10 righteous people living there.

c) Two angels of God were sent to personally investigate the huge outcry that reached heaven because of the sinfulness of the people.

d) Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed, reduced to ashes.

2. “Condemned them to destruction”

a) Sodom and Gomorrah had every chance to repent.

b) They chose the path of sin.

c) They received God’s judgment and were condemned to destruction.

d) It was a catastrophe.

3. “Making them an example to those who afterward would live ungodly”

a) Sodom and Gomorrah were made an example.

b) They had been made an example:

i) Of how God would judge the unrepentant.

ii) Judgment and destruction were obvious outcomes.

c) There is always a choice to be made.

i) One could choose righteousness.

ii) One could lean towards ungodliness.

d) The severe consequences must be borne in mind.

i) Angels were not spared (2 Peter 2:4).

ii) The ancient world was destroyed (2 Peter 2:5).

iii) Sodom and Gomorrah were reduced to ashes (2 Peter 2:6).
