"As we received commandment from the Father."

Text: 2 John 4

WALKING IN OBEDIENCE TO GOD’S COMMANDMENTS

The great joy that the Apostle John felt is further explained as we read the text carefully.

“I rejoiced greatly that I have found some of your children walking in truth,
as we received commandment from the Father.”
2 John 4

1. “Your children walking in truth”

a) There was special joy because of the love that John had for the elect lady and her children.
b) “Walking in truth”
i) The word “walk” was often used to describe a person living out what he believes.
ii) The children of the elect lady were consciously living out their faith in Christ.
iii) They were not just acknowledging the truth.
iv) They were living out the truth they believed in.

2. “As we received commandment”

a) John was most conscious of the commandments that he had received from the Lord Jesus.
b) His understanding of the commandments was well reflected in his writings.
i) The Gospel of John
ii) The Epistles of John (1,2,3 John)
c) John had grown to love the Lord Jesus dearly
i) This is reflected in his frequent reference to the Lord Jesus.
ii) His teachings were constantly mentioned.
iii) John’s theology was essentially Christ-centered.

3. “From the Father”

a) John remembered how often Jesus made reference to His Father.
b) Jesus would speak of the following things about His Father:-
i) He is the source of His teaching.
ii) His Father loved Him.
iii) His Father worked alongside.
iv) His Father bore witness of His life and ministry.
c) It comes as no surprise that John would remark that the commandments came from the Father. This was certainly in keeping with what the Lord Jesus Himself taught.
