"If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine..."

Text: 2 John 10

THE DOCTRINE OF CHRIST

How important is this doctrine? The Apostle John places tremendous significance to the possession of this doctrine.

“If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine,
do not receive him into your house nor greet him;
for he who greets him shares in his evil deeds.”
2 John 10-11

1. “If anyone comes to you”

a) This is a reference to those who proclaim themselves to be “servants of the Lord”.
b) They seek friends who may become their patrons or supporters.
c) Those who were wealthy were more than happy to provide for these servants of the Lord.

2. “And does not bring this doctrine”

a) These people may try and pass themselves off as servants of the Lord.
b) But what if they do not carry with them the doctrine of Christ?
i) They do not have the Father.
ii) They do not have the Son.
iii) They are not true servants of the Lord.

3. “Do not receive him into your house”

a) These false brethren are not to be received into the house.
b) Gracious patrons would normally provide
i) Lodging
ii) Food
iii) Money

4. “Nor greet him”

a) Friendship is not recommended at all; greetings are extended to “friends”.
b) The elect lady must not let her kindness get the better of her!

5. “For he who greets him shares in his evil deeds”

a) The person in question is in fact a false teacher.
b) To support a false teacher is to be a partaker of evil deeds!
