Day 10

"This is love, that we walk according to His commandments."

Text: 2 John 6

LOVE IN THE CONTEXT OF GOD’S COMMANDMENT

The Apostle John was conscious of that which passed as “love”. False teachers also employed this word to their own advantage. Thus John felt it necessary to emphasise what true Christian love was all about.

“This is love, that we walk according to His commandments.
This is the commandment, that as you have heard from the beginning,
you should walk in it.”
2 John 6

1. The preaching of love

a) Many proclaim the word “love”.
b) What is the difference between John’s proclamation and that of others?

2. John’s definition of “love”

a) There is a strong and close link between “love” and “God’s commandments”.
b) This feature must be borne in mind very clearly and consciously.

3. “This is love”

a) This was John’s attempt to distinguish his definition of love.
b) He was fully aware that others were also proclaiming this word.

4. “That we walk according to His commandments”

a) To truly practise “love” we must bear in mind the commandments of the Lord.
b) Our walk must have at least two features in mind:-
i) Love
ii) God’s commandments

5. “This is the commandment, that as you have heard from the beginning.”

a) This was not a new truth John was proclaiming.
b) It is an old commandment.
c) This teaching may be traced to “the beginning”.

6. “You should walk in it”

a) To walk in love as Christ loved us.
b) To walk in His commandments as well.
c) The commandments of God cannot be separated.
d) To proclaim love without reference to the commandments of God is not “God’s kind of love”.
